-Tipperary, Limerick & Nenagh
|
|
|
| Despite what the song says it’s not such a long way to Tipperary. This vast,
rich and varied county boasts a fascinating array of historical attractions
ranging from the legendary Rock of Cashel to Roscrea Castle and countless
picturesque villages and charming towns. Our base for this very special
Glenton holiday is the region’s capital of Nenagh. This friendly and bustling
town has a unique style and atmosphere with imposing eighteenth century
townhouses sitting alongside the impressive castle and elegant courthouse. |

Excursion 1
Nenagh
| Today we explore Nenagh, famous throughout the Emerald Isle for its incredible
array of interesting buildings and ruins. Attractions include Nenagh Castle, a fine
Norman keep that dates back to the thirteenth century. Nenagh and District Heritage
Centre, a museum dedicated to the region’s history, is housed in the old gaol with its
quirky octagonal governor’s residence. Later in the day we visit Dromineer, a thriving
village popular with yachting types. We also stop at Garykennedy on the shores of
mighty Lough Derg. |

Excursion 2
Limerick
| A full day excursion to the metropolitan city of Limerick. Tourist attractions include
the thirteenth century King John’s Castle, St Mary’s Cathedral, the impressive
university and the Treaty Stone, a block of limestone on which the Treaty of Limerick
is said to have been signed in 1691, thus ending a bloody war between the
Williamites and the Jacobites. With great shopping and scores of lovely bars and
restaurants, modern Limerick has come a long way from the gritty city portrayed in
Frank McCourt’s grim memoir Angela’s Ashes! |

Excursion 3
Tipperary
| We enjoy a scenic drive through some of Tipperary’s most breathtaking scenery,
pausing along the way to drink in the unrivalled beauty of this unique part of the
world. Close to the lovely Glen of Aherlow, Tipperary town offers the authentic feel of
a nineteenth century Irish market town. The vibrantly coloured shop fronts are one of
the country’s indelible delights. |
